WHERE TO TAKE HARD-TO-RECYCLE ITEMS:

  • Rotary box locations for plastic bags and shrink wrap. Locations – Interfaith Ministry, SaveMart, Helling Library, Briarpatch, B&C, Nevada City City Hall, Wild Birds, ReStore, B&C, Holiday Markets

  • Safeway and SPD stores have plastic bag collection containers.

  • ReStore - drop off lots of usable items, including bags.

  • Staples accepts all -E-waste, to send to a re-processor, except TVs.

  • Mercury Cleaners is a green cleaner – you can opt out of plastic bags.

  • Clothing in good condition for resale – Solstice, Nevada City; Marley Lane, GV.

  • Clothing in fair to good condition: Hospitality House & other local thrift shops; repurpose or give away.

  • Clothing/textiles that are too worn for resale or donation:

    • ReTold - Send through the mail. They will sift and sort your goods, sending them to thrift stores, donation centers, recyclers, resellers and up-cyclers. Nothing will end up in landfill!

    • H&M Recycling Program - Take clothing/textiles in any condition to a register at an H&M store.

Love those plants! But OH, those POTS!

Here’s what to do with them!

  • REUSE them yourself or take to a nursery/grower.

  • RECYCLE – See what your hauler takes – usually #1-2 – good chance they will be reprocessed IF relatively clean of dirt

  • REQUEST – Nurseries can ASK suppliers to use RECYCLED CONTENT POTS – many are available! Blooms uses recycled. It is one extra use of the material before the dump.

  • REQUEST AGAIN - ask nurseries to buy only #1-2 to sell.

  • RETHINK - Buy compostable pots! Or fabric Smart Pots! ASK nurseries to at least use recycled content containers. Yeah, they cost more, but we are talking reducing methane produced by these pots in landfill…and reducing the fire hazard exacerbated by global warming (plastic pots are highly flammable)!
